The ITM Teacher Training Programme is a four year professional training leading to certification as a teacher of the Interactive Teaching Method for teaching the F M Alexander Technique.
Classes are held on weekends, usually once a month. During the Use of Hands in Teaching Modules I and II and the exams in the last year, weekends are held more frequently. Over the years, we have found that the most effective way for most people to learn Alexander’s work is through intense periods of input followed by time in which to assimilate and process the information.
The Basic Proficiency Course
The first 18 months of the programme is recommended as a general foundation in the principles of the Alexander Technique for anyone, whether or not they are interested in becoming a teacher. Successful completion of the three courses in this block will result in the awarding of the Basic Proficiency Certificate
The Teaching Course
The final two and a quarter years builds on the foundation of personal competence developed in the Basic Proficiency Course and extends it to the art of communicating the principles and practice to others. Successful completion of these courses qualifies the student to take the teacher certification examinations.
On passing the final examinations, students will be eligible for professional membership of the Interactive Teaching Method Association.
In keeping with its commitment to personal development through the work of F M Alexander, the training programme lays considerable emphasis on the art of teaching itself, through studying the ways in which people learn and develop most naturally and effectively.
It seeks to develop an extensive range of teaching skills – including the distinctive use of hands which is characteristic of Alexander teaching – in order to equip teachers to work effectively in a wide variety of contexts: with individuals, in large or small groups; in business, sport and the performing arts etc.
Course format
On Friday evening from 6.30 -10.00 there is an Experiential Workshop. This is a series of structured classes where there will be ample opportunity to have practical lessons, pursue issues, and ask questions.
From 9am -6pm on Saturday and Sunday, there will be larger interactive classes focussing more on the written material for the module.
Experiential Training
An important part of the training of any Alexander teacher is experiential work. In our training course, experiential work formally takes place on Friday nights. Not only does this provide a means for improvement in the student’s own standard of use, but should also ideally provide a wide range of manners and methods of teaching from which the student’s own teaching methods can be modelled.
What does the course fee include?
The course fees entitle the student to attendance at all training programme classes, access to the audio and library materials, in-course examination fees, any photocopied material and appropriate tutoring work where deemed necessary.
