2008 Basic Principles course

Starts: September 2008 at Trinity College, Stoke Hill, Bristol, BS9 1JP
Duration: 6 weekends, approx 1 weekend per month
Cost : £1320 payable at the beginning of the module or by monthly standing order

Basic Principles is a new approach to the training of students and teachers in the principles of F.M. Alexander.

This course is designed to awaken, encourage, and discipline what Mr Alexander called our supreme inheritance: the power of our conscious minds to direct ourselves constructively for a continual improvement in the performance of all our activities.

Teachers working together
Basic Principles is conducted in an interactive seminar format. The course is a mixture of experiential classes combined with a line by line investigation of the most important introductory texts from Alexander’s writings, and a critical review of Frank Pierce Jones’ book, Freedom to Change. Through the open, frank, and often heated discussion of the ideas and principles described, students are able to gain perspective on their own thoughts and ideas with regard to the work. This clarity of thought and insight into both Alexander’s procedures and the student’s understanding of them has proven without fail to have immediate and profound effects upon the student’s ability to translate an improved manner of thinking into an improved quality of performance in activity.

Course format

Basic principles takes place over 6 weekends. On Friday evening from 6.30 -10.00 there is an Experiential Workshop. This is a series of structured classes where there will be ample opportunity to have practical lessons, pursue issues, and ask questions.

From 9am -6pm on Saturday and Sunday, there will be larger interactive classes focussing more on the written material for the module.
